Overview

I attended two ODIs at Forfarshire CC in 2025, Scotland vs. Nepal and Nepal vs. Netherlands. Both fixtures, and the spectator experience, were vastly improved by the presence of Nepal’s fervent supporters. These fans lift tier-two international cricket from a quaint sideshow played at provincial club grounds to something that can rival the best tier-one ODI cricket for passion and excitement. I was unable to attend the Scotland vs. Netherlands fixture, which might have dragged down the atmosphere & experience score for this ground. However, cricket at this level needs support, and Forfarshire is a perfectly serviceable place to watch it. There’s good coffee and cake, a pizza van, and a bar serving decent beer. The Portaloos leave a lot to be desired, but there’s a charm to spending the day in a lawn chair surrounded by die-hard Nepal fans who have travelled from all over to see their team. This is the sort of experience that is all too rare in sport and it is absolutely worth seeking out.

Score Summaries

Atmosphere & Experience: 9
If you ever get a chance to attend a Nepal game, take it. Their fans are some of the most exuberant you’ll find. They bring an energy and passion lacking in many cricket matches you’ll see in the UK. With an alternative opposition, one would expect a Scotland game at this ground to be a very different proposition. That said, even with a much quieter crowd, this would be a lovely place to sit in the sun for a day of cricket.

Seats: 8
They’re lawn chairs, but you can sit pretty much wherever you want and they’re more comfortable than many stadium seats. You’ll be at ground level, and the slope up towards the playing square does impede your view somewhat, but you just need to lean in to the charm of watching international cricket on a lumpy field outside Broughty Ferry.

Catering: 8.5
Cricket Scotland have brought in local catering companies who provide great coffee, some lovely cakes and cookies, tasty wood-fired pizza, and a selection of Scottish beers. Given that you’re in a field on the outskirts of a suburb of Dundee, that’s pretty good.

Facilities: 3
The pavilion isn’t big enough to provide seating or facilities for spectators, so it’s all Portaloos. And not a lot of them. It’s pretty unpleasant by the end of the day.

Getting There: 5
If you’re staying in Broughty Ferry, it’s fine. It’s a 10-15 minute walk up to the ground from the town centre. If you’re coming from elsewhere, particularly one of Scotland’s larger town, then you’re taking a train to Dundee and waiting for the irregular service out to Broughty Ferry.

Getting Away: 4
A point lower than for getting there because the train timetable is so infrequent that you pretty much need to leave a few overs before the close of play if the game goes the distance or wait the best part of two hours for the next train back to Dundee.
